Michigan Driver Taken Into Custody After Car Crashes into Detroit Airport Terminal

ROMULUS, MI - Authorities have taken one person into custody after a car crashed through a terminal at Detroit Metro Airport on Friday evening, January 23.

The crash happened around 7:30 p.m., according to airport officials. Video from a 7 News Detroit employee who was at the airport shows the vehicle inside the McNamara Terminal, WXYZ reported. DTW officials said that the car hit a ticket counter. Travelers who witnessed what happened confirmed that police and TSA responded quickly.

Witnesses also said they heard a loud noise as the car slammed through the entrance and into the Delta Air Lines desk as employees were working. One witness said that the driver got out of the vehicle with his hands raised and was speaking, though it is unclear what the driver was saying.

Officials took the driver into custody without further incident. "The response was so quick thank God with the cops and TSA and everybody," said Ali Khalifa, who was traveling. "That all happened in seconds."

Six people were treated at the scene. A K9 unit searched the vehicle and found nothing of concern inside, according to FOX2. It is unknown what led up to the crash and officials said that the driver was suffering from a mental health episode.

"The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) Police Department is currently investigating a vehicle that drove into the entrance of the McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) hitting a ticket counter," Wayne County Airport Authority said in a statement.

"The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 this evening. The driver is in custody and the cause of the crash is unknown at this time. The WCAA Fire Department treated six people at the scene. We'll provide more information as it becomes available."
