CREDIT RIVER, MN - A 47-year-old Minnesota woman was sentenced to just over a quarter century behind bars earlier in April in connection with the fatal shooting of her boyfriend back in 2024, who was reportedly also her cousin.
On March 4, 2024, Jennifer Lynn Lieber had been at her home with her boyfriend, David Nanovic, and his 10-year-old son, and had become agitated with her significant other and his young son while they were watching TV together. Lieber, who’d apparently been drinking that day, retrieved a handgun and threatened Nanovic and the child.
At the time of the incident, Lieber’s own children were present in the home, and they, along with Nanovic and his son, collectively expressed concerns about Lieber’s mental state as she brandished the firearm. Nanovic, who is Lieber’s cousin, had been staying at the pool house at the mansion property and had begun a romantic relationship with his cousin, which became hostile over time, according to reports.
Following the brandishing incident, Nanovic and his son retreated to the pool house on the property, but Lieber’s children reportedly went to the pool house and asked if he could check on the family dogs inside the mansion. When Nanovic and his son obliged and attempted to check on the pets, they were greeted once again by an armed Lieber who fired a single shot but didn’t hit either of them.
During a later attempt to check on the home, this time entering alone, Nanovic never returned to the pool house, his 10-year-old son later told police. During Nanovic's attempt, Lieber’s own children contacted their father, Stuart, who was embroiled in an ongoing divorce with their mother, saying their mother “was not acting normal.”
In light of the concerning call from his children, the Delta pilot called 911 requesting a welfare check of the home, which is where police stumbled upon a grisly murder scene: Nanovic’s body at the base of a basement staircase, covered in blood, with the firearm lying next to him that was apparently used in the commission of the crime.
Lieber reportedly told responding officers that the gun went off while she tried to kick the weapon away from Nanovic; however, forensic evidence showed the gun was fired at close range, directly at the victim’s forehead.
Lieber was convicted of second-degree murder this past February, with her subsequent sentencing resulting in a 25-and-a-half-year prison term, which she’ll only have to serve 16 years behind bars, with the remainder of her time being on supervised release.
