WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Donald Trump reportedly signaled his support earlier in April to updating the agency name of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with a proposed addition of “National” to the beginning of the agency's existing name, which would transform the agency acronym to “NICE.”
On April 26, President Trump signaled his support for updating the agency name of ICE to “NICE,” an idea that was reportedly attributed to social media influencer Alyssa Marie, who previously worked for Project Veritas.
The proposed change in agency acronym was seemingly meant to serve as a joke geared toward forcing mainstream media outlets to identify ICE agents in their reporting as “NICE agents,” thus serving as a pun even when would-be media reporting on the agency would be critical. President Trump had apparently stumbled upon Marie’s suggested pun, taking to Truth Social with a screenshot of her suggestion with an added caption reading, “GREAT IDEA!!! DO IT.”
Reportedly, official name changes to federal agencies and departments require congressional approval, but this reality hasn’t stopped the Trump administration from creating de facto workarounds to introduce “secondary names” to government-run entities, such as with the rebranding of the Department of Defense to the Department of War by way of executive order.
While it is unclear whether President Trump intends to genuinely follow through with the assertions he made on Truth Social regarding a rebranding of ICE, his administration has already established the template for achieving such a goal if the president decides to move forward.
President Trump’s remarks on updating ICE’s agency name come at a time when the agency is under scrutiny, with the Senate voting to fund all of Homeland Security sans ICE and lateral agencies this past March. A budget reconciliation was finally updated earlier in April to fund ICE and other immigration enforcement agencies after House Republicans refused to pass a budget where ICE was left unfunded.
