DURHAM, NC - Authorities are investigating a shooting that left two people dead and one person injured. Officers were called to reports of a shooting around midnight on Friday, March 13, on North Roxboro Street near Old Oxford Road.

Upon arriving at the scene, police found three individuals inside a vehicle who had been shot: two men and a woman, WRAL News reported. The two men died at the scene, and the woman was taken to a local hospital. She is expected to fully recover.

The incident happened just hours after city and county leaders met to create a plan to reduce gun violence. The conversations are the first part of a three-phase violence reduction plan.

Just this year, Durham leaders reported that violent crime dropped nearly 17% in 2025, though some residents believe more work needs to be done. Renee Johnson has lived in Durham for the past three years and is concerned about the level of violence in the city.

"You hear a lot of shootings with the youth involved, and I think there needs to be more programs for mentoring youth," Johnson said, adding she believes it is a community effort to keep the city safe. She said her church has started a youth mentorship program aimed at addressing bullying and violence.

"I think it's a community effort, that different churches, different programs need to get together," Johnson continued. "You can't complain about the problem if you aren't part of the solution."

Others are worried about the rise of gun violence, CBS17 reported. "It’s just the reality of gun ownership in America. It’s like a prolific thing that everyone has easy access to. Unfortunately, it’s used in ways that are fatal to our neighbors, which breaks my heart,” said Nathaniel Schweinberg, who also lives in Durham. “I wish there was a lot more gun control and active prevention to prevent sad stories like this."

Laticia Facyson has been an anti-gun violence advocate since her son was shot and killed in 2020. She said she was devastated when she drove by the scene overnight.

"The first thing on my mind is, what are we going to do now?” Facyson said. “Are we just going to keep talking about it? Is this it, or are we going to put some action behind it?"

Police are actively investigating the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Durham Police Investigator A. Junker at 919-560-4440 at ext. 29416, or Durham Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
