New York, NY - A New York Police Department detective was placed on administrative leave after it was discovered that he had snuck his way into the Ryder Cup golf tournament wearing full tactical gear while President Trump was visiting.

In a story that's both entertaining and troubling, the cop nearly went unnoticed by the official security detail who gave the detective partial access to the event.

The detective, Melvin Eng, who was out on leave from the NYPD at the time, allegedly donned full tactical gear, carried his firearm and other equipment, and made it past the initial round of security.

It wasn't until he dropped a magazine in front of the official security detail that nearby state troopers began questioning him, ultimately determining he was unauthorized.

Detective Eng has been placed on administrative leave and is facing a charge of theft of services for the bold stunt.

"During questioning, Detective Eng provided conflicting information about the reasons he was at the golf course,” state police spokesman Beau Duffy said in a release.

Duffy continued, “After further investigation, it was determined that Detective Eng was not affiliated with any of the law enforcement security operations at the tournament. He was removed from the park and [the] NYPD was notified.”

The stunt not only raised eyebrows within the law enforcement community, but it also disappointed some.

“You’re out sick. What are you doing at the Ryder Cup?” one cop told the media. “You can’t do that. And it’s theft of service because you went in for free and then you lied …”

Troubling Security Concerns

According to reports, Detective Eng allegedly arrived at the tournament on Friday, the first day of the event, claiming to be on the president’s detail. President Trump eventually made an appearance, accompanied by his granddaughter Kai Trump.

Acquiring police-style clothing and equipment is a rather simple process and can be purchased online.

Questions arise from both sides of the aisle as to whether there are enough safety protocols for high-profile government officials.

Considering the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk and the multiple attempts on President Trump’s life, security for public appearances by government officials needs to be extra tight. America cannot continue relying on luck and chance; we must rely on sound tactical decisions and alert law enforcement.
