Ohio Police vs. Firefighters Rivalry Raises Funds for Charity

NILES, OH – The Warren City Police Department faced off against the local fire department in a fundraising softball game earlier in August, which a portion of the ticket sales would benefit the winning team.

On August 18th, local residents of Niles were treated to a rivalrous but friendly game of softball between first responders from the neighboring city of Warren, with the police department going toe to toe with the fire department for the accolades and a portion of the ticket sales to benefit their respective departments as well as the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Taking place at Eastwood Field, the Warren City Police Department wound up securing the victory between the two competing first responder factions, but just because the police department took the win, there was no love lost between the two departments.

WPD Sergeant Manny Nites emphasized to a local news outlet that the game served as an opportunity for the two departments to have a little friendly competition to complement the collaborative efforts they regularly partake in professionally.

“We see our brother firemen every day on a daily basis, at all kinds of scenes,” Sergeant Nites stated, adding, “So it's just good to get out here and run around, have a little bit of fun with them, and good competition on both sides.”

Considering WPD took the win and thus a portion of the ticket sales, Sergeant Nites said of the plans with the funds raised, “We'll probably put the funds to the ‘Shop with a Cop’ program, which is around Christmastime, benefiting the little kids and the community.”

One of the firefighters with the Warren City Fire Department, Corky Manofsky, said of the experience, “It's great for the public to come out and see us, and kids and things, [because] they all want to become cops and firemen, and we love it, and it's just a good thing.”
