NYPD Officer Fatally Shoots Man Armed With Boxcutter During Domestic Call

NEW YORK CITY, NY - A domestic altercation between a 29-year-old man and his father at a Queens apartment culminated in a fatal officer-involved shooting earlier in December, with officials saying the NYPD officer fired the fatal shots after the 29-year-old allegedly charged the officer with a boxcutter.

At approximately 12:25 a.m. on December 21st, NYPD officers responded to a 911 call regarding a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex located in the Queens Far Rockaway neighborhood near the intersection of Nameoke Street and Central Avenue.

According to officials, a 29-year-old male was involved in some kind of altercation with his father. The officers were escorted into the home by the individual's parents.

Upon entering the apartment, officers and the individual’s parents were unable to locate the 29-year-old, leading to officers exiting the residence and encountering the suspect in the building hallway while allegedly armed with a boxcutter.

Police say the armed subject and his father began scuffling while officers repeatedly issued commands for the 29-year-old to drop the weapon, which said commands were reportedly ignored.

NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera told members of the media that the father eventually “disengaged from the physical altercation with his son and retreated behind the uniformed police officers,” with the 29-year-old allegedly charging at the officers while still armed with the boxcutter following his father’s retreat.

One of the officers reportedly discharged his Taser while the second officer on scene fired an unspecified number of shots at the 29-year-old at close range.

Life-saving measures were employed by the officers until the arrival of paramedics, who transferred the individual to an area hospital, but the individual ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities have yet to release the names of the deceased subject or the officers involved in the matter. Chief Rivera emphasized in his statement that “This incident, once again, demonstrates the dangers that our police officers face every day, and how routine calls can quickly escalate into extremely dangerous situations.” The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is currently reviewing the incident.
