Supreme Court Ruling Delivers Big Win for ICE and President Trump

WASHINGTON, DC – In a yet-to-be-signed order, the Supreme Court reportedly backed the Trump administration’s approach to immigration enforcement in areas like Southern California earlier in September, granting a request from the Justice Department to place a hold on a lower court’s order prohibiting certain immigration enforcement methods.

Back in July, we at Law Enforcement Today reported on the ongoing legal battle between the Trump administration and a lawsuit coming out of California trying to hinder enforcement mechanisms utilized by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Southern California.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, among others, claimed in the lawsuit that ICE was engaged in “unlawful stop and arrest practices” in areas like Los Angeles where targeted immigration enforcement operations were taking place.

Over the summer, the Justice Department was working fervently to have a stay placed on a restraining order handed down by a lower federal court judge which effectively labeled attempts to have consensual encounters with suspected illegal aliens unconstitutional.

Come September 8th, the Justice Department finally managed to gain ground in their legal fight over immigration enforcement operations, with the Supreme Court reportedly granting the Trump administration’s request to have a hold placed on the lower court’s restraining order.

Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a statement on social media in light of the SCOTUS win, calling the high court’s decision to side with the Justice Department’s request a step toward ending “judicial micromanagement.”

“Another massive victory at the Supreme Court from [the Justice Department] attorneys, this time defending [ICE],” the post from AG Bondi reads, further noting, “In a 6-3 decision, the Court stayed an injunction that attempted to hamper ICE operations across the Los Angeles area.  Now, ICE can continue carrying out roving patrols in California without judicial micromanagement. We will continue fighting and winning for [President Trump’s] agenda in court.”

Unsurprisingly, Governor Gavin Newsom was appalled at the high court’s decision, issuing a fearmongering statement implying no one is safe from ICE, saying, “This isn't about enforcing immigration laws - it's about targeting Latinos and anyone who doesn't look or sound like Stephen Miller's idea of an American, including U.S. citizens and children, to deliberately harm California's families and small businesses.”

Governor Newsom emphasized that somehow American families are at risk due to SCOTUS allowing the federal government to carry out immigration enforcement operations in Southern California, further noting, “Trump's private police force now has a green light to come after your family - and every person is now a target - but we will continue fighting these abhorrent attacks on Californians.”

Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s musings in the decision pushed back against the prevailing narrative coming out of progressive politicians and anti-ICE activists, where said pro-illegal immigration stalwarts outwardly suggest that innocent American citizens are going to be caught up in the proverbial crossfire of immigration enforcement operations.

“The Government sometimes makes brief investigative stops to check the immigration status of those who gather in locations where people are hired for day jobs; who work or appear to working jobs such as construction, landscaping, agriculture, or carwashes that often do not require paperwork and are therefore attractive to illegal immigrants; and who do not speak much if any English,” Justice Kavanaugh wrote, adding, “If the officers learn that the individual they stopped is a U. S. citizen or otherwise lawfully in the United States, they promptly let the individual go.”
