Got him! Suspect arrested in fatal shooting of Houston-area deputy constable

GALVESTON, TX - A suspect has been arrested in the fatal shooting of Harris County Deputy Constable Maher Husseini, who was killed on his way to work.

Authorities apprehended the suspect, Athir Murady, at the conclusion of a manhunt on Wednesday, according to Fox 26 Houston. Murady reportedly crashed a vehicle into the wayer near Old Causeway road in the port town. Camera footage from the scene of the arrest showed police escorting the suspect as he was carried in a stretcher.

Murady was wanted in connection to the shooting death of Constable Husseini, who had served as a law enforcement officer with Harris County Precinct 4 since 2021. Husseini was shot and killed as he traveled in a civillian vehicle. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, according to the New York Times.

The Port of Galveston Police Department indicated that Murady attempted to evade apprehension by jumping into the water and attempting to swim north before his arrest.

Reportedly, Constable Husseini's dash cam showed he and Murady having a "cordial" discussion about 10-15 minutes before the shooting. This discussion occurred at what appears to be a private security company owned by Corporal Husseini. Reportedly, both men owned private security companies in the area.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott mourned Husseini in a statement pledging to hold his murderer accountable after his death. "The hearts of Texans are breaking today with the news that Harris County Deputy Constable Maher Husseini was shot and killed while on his way to work," he said.

"The dangerous criminal who ambushed and murdered Deputy Constable Husseini will have the full weight of the law brought down upon him. Texas is a law and order state, and I will always defend the brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect Texans. Cecilia and I ask our fellow Texans to join us in lifting up in prayer the family and loved ones of Deputy Constable Husseini."

Husseini's friends and family are describing him as a Ph.D educated father of two who descended from a prominent family in the city of Jerusalem. Law enforcement officers from various agencies across the area lined up to salute Husseini's body en masse as he was transported from Ben Taub Hospital to a medical examiner's facility.
