Three shot as NYPD confront armed suspect with a history of 20 arrests

NEW YORK CITY, NY - A shooting incident involving a knife-armed suspect at a Brooklyn subway station has landed four individuals, including an NYPD officer, in an area hospital.

Police indicated that the gunfire took place on Sunday afternoon in the Sutter Avenue station in Brooklyn's Brownsville neighborhood, according to CBS News. The suspect was hospitalized after being shot multiple times. One 26-year old woman recieved a grazing wound, and a 49-year old was also shot in the head, and is listed in critical condition.

A responding NYPD officer was shot in the armpit area, being hospitalized after performing law enforcement duties at the scene of the incident.

Interim Police Commissioner Tom Donlon indicated that the shooting was the responsibility of the knife-wielding suspect- who reportedly has a history of more than twenty arrests, including for violent crimes.

"Make no mistake, the events that occurred on the Sutter Avenue station platform were the results of an armed perpetrator, who was confronted by officers doing the job we asked them to do. There will be a full and thorough investigation conducted into this incident, as we always do in cases like this. But right now we are grateful that our officer will be OK."

A photograph from the scene of the altercation revealed the suspect bearing a sharp knife.

Metro Transit Authority CEO Janno Lieber also pointed to the suspect's history of offenses in identifying him as the violent actor in the city subway system.

"It started because somebody wanted to come to the transit system with a weapon, somebody who, as the mayor said, had a history of crime and a history of violence and even gun charges."

NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey described the suspect as having threatened two police officers who confronted him for entering the subway system without paying the fare before the altercation, having reviewed body camera footage.

"At a certain point on the platform the male mutters the words 'I'm going to kill you if you don't stop following me,'" Maddrey described. The suspect began advancing on the officers with a knife after they utilized a less-than-lethal Taser system.

"[The suspect] decided he wasn't going to go nicely with the officers and the officers were put in a very difficult situation to save themselves."

Photographs from the scene of the event revealed first responders evacuating seriously injured persons for medical treatment.

The NYPD's Force Investigation Division is investigating the shooting, according to WABC-TV. The charges the knife-armed suspect will face are unclear.
