How Road Rage Ended in Gunfire on a Florida Highway

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL – A 33-year-old Florida man is facing charges of attempted murder following an alleged road rage incident this past April where authorities claim the suspect opened fire on a vehicle hosting four occupants, one of which is a child, in response to allegedly being cut off and brake-checked by one of the victims.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release regarding an April 29th road rage incident that nearly turned deadly. According to authorities, 911 dispatchers received a call about a shooting near Highway 92 and Wiggins Road at approximately 3:14 p.m., with the caller identifying themself as one of four victims being shot at by a driver in a pursuing vehicle.

Authorities say the pursuit continued onto I-4, with the alleged shooter, identified as 33-year-old Nicolas Totherow, eventually disengaging after the family exited the interstate off of County Line Road while the suspect continued eastbound. Following the incident, deputies made contact with the victims, confirming their vehicle “had been struck by gunfire multiple times.”

At approximately 6:00 p.m. on the day of the incident, Totherow was taken into custody on charges of attempted first-degree murder, four counts aggravated battery with a firearm, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, shooting at within/into a vehicle, armed possession of controlled substance, and driving on a suspended license.

Prosecutors say that after Totherow was taken into custody and interviewed by detectives, he allegedly admitted to pursuing and firing upon the victims after they “cut him off and brake-checked him twice,” further allegedly admitting, “that he intended to kill the driver.”

A loaded firearm was reportedly recovered from Totherow’s vehicle following his arrest, with officials describing the weapon as a TH9C 9 mm semi-automatic handgun with 16 rounds of ammunition within the magazine. A vape pen containing THC was also recovered from the suspect’s vehicle at the time of his arrest, which reportedly hosted a THC content above the state’s legal limit.

Totherow remains in custody at the Hillsborough County Jail without bond.
