STAUNTON, VA - Last year, Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) fooled Virginia voters into believing she was a moderate. However, from the minute she was sworn into office, her actions have shown her to be a far-left radical who is hell-bent on destroying the Commonwealth.
In another case that critics say highlights the consequences of Spanberger’s policies, an illegal alien allegedly went on a stabbing spree on Aug. 30 in the city of Staunton, WHSV-3 reported. On arrival, police officers found two female victims at the scene, both of whom had been stabbed. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other victim was transported to the hospital and was expected to survive. The suspect was found at the scene.
The illegal alien, Freddi Chigo Mil, 32, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding. He was being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail.
Now, Fox News Digital reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is asking Virginia officials to hold on to Mil, asking Spanberger and “her fellow sanctuary politicians” not to release him.
On the same day Mil was arrested, ICE arrested an illegal alien from El Salvador in Woodbridge, Virginia. Yinmi Molina-Zepeda is wanted in his home country for aggravated homicide, among a host of other crimes.
The latest violent crime allegedly committed by an illegal alien in Virginia caused Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to slam Spanberger and Virginia’s sanctuary policies.
“[T]his is what the Commonwealth of Virginia has become under the sanctuary policies of Gov. Abigail Spanberger and her fellow sanctuary politicians...this illegal alien from Mexico [Mil] has been charged with murder after a stabbing spree that killed one woman and injured another.”
Continuing, Mullin said, “ICE has lodged a detainer asking Gov. Spanberger to cooperate with us and commit to not releasing this criminal from jail, so that he can be removed from our country once he faces justice.”
“It’s time to put an end to these preventable tragedies,” he added. “Deporting illegal aliens saves lives.”
Spanberger’s policies have drawn the ire of criminal justice advocates, including Jennifer Harrison, executive director of the victim advocacy organization Victims’ Rights Reform Council. She likewise slammed Spanberger’s policies. She told Fox News Digital that “everything is out of control in these upside-down jurisdictions run by politicians like Spanberger who call themselves ‘moderate Democrats’ while implementing policies that put criminals ahead of victims and public safety.”
“How much blood has to be spilled in our streets before elected officials wake up and change course?” she asked rhetorically.
“We have reached a point where the federal government has to ask state and local officials not to release dangerous illegal immigrants back into American communities. Think about how insane that is,” Harrison continued.
“These are people who should not be in this country to begin with, and yet after they are accused of committing serious crimes here, when they have dead bodies in front of them, we are still having a debate over whether they should be released back onto our streets.”
DHS issued a press release in which it highlighted 22 cases of violent crime allegedly committed by illegal aliens in Virginia thus far in 2026. Charges filed include child pornography offenses, sex offenses against children, attempted disarming of a law enforcement officer, murder, aggravated sexual battery, rape, abduction, and other serious crimes.
The crime problem that critics have linked to Spanberger’s policies is not limited to illegal aliens. Last week in Manassas, Virginia, three men with criminal histories who were out on bond engaged in a shootout downtown. None of the suspects were struck; however, a 16-year-old high school student was killed in the crossfire, WJLA-7 News reports.
One of the suspects, Tasheem Douglas, 21, was granted an unsecured bond related to a firearms arrest in Prince William County. The magistrate set an initial bond; however, a judge released him on an unsecured bond, a move that was not opposed by Commonwealth Attorney Amy Ashworth’s office. Douglas had an extensive criminal history and pleaded guilty to felony firearm possession two years ago. He was sentenced to five years in prison; however, all but two months were suspended.
As for Spanberger, she was in Manassas and was about to be questioned; however, her press secretary interceded and said she would answer questions after the event she was attending.
A News 7 reporter attempted to question Spanberger about the shooting:
“Governor, a 16-year-old girl was murdered in Manassas,” the reporter, Nick Minock, said. “Do you think the criminal justice system failed this 16-year-old girl? Governor, your staff said you had a couple of minutes for questions. Why didn’t your staff honor that promise? Governor, what message do you have to that 16-year-old girl who was shot and killed in downtown Manassas? Do you have time to answer the question? Do you think the General Assembly should support judges that make sure things like this don’t happen, Governor?”
Spanberger refused to answer the questions.
News 7 also reached out to Ashworth, who did not make herself available.
One of Spanberger’s other initial acts was to replace the Virginia Parole Board, Townhall reported. Statistics cited by Minock show that under the new board, violent criminals are ten times more likely to get parole.
Christine Allen, mother of a three-month-old girl, was stabbed to death in Fairfax County in 1998 by her live-in boyfriend, Troy Demar, who was later found guilty of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 40 years in jail. Despite pleas from her family to keep him locked up, Spanberger’s newly appointed parole board released him.
Former Attorney General Jason Miyares slammed Spanberger after the decision:
Despite criticism of Spanberger’s criminal justice and immigration policies, her office claims that she “strongly believes violent criminals who are in the United States illegally should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and deported,” in response to the complaints from DHS.
The spokesperson continued that “under Gov. Spanberger’s leadership, the Virginia Department of Corrections continues the long-standing practice of notifying ICE when individuals born outside the United States are in state custody” and that “Virginia state law enforcement agencies also continue to participate in task forces and interagency cooperation with federal agencies.”
“Gov. Spanberger will always prioritize the safety and well-being of Virginia families.”
Others disagree.
“Spanberger’s actions are not pro-immigrant. They are pro-criminal,” said Sean Kennedy, president of Virginians for Safe Communities, to Fox News Digital.
“By shielding dangerous offenders from removal precisely because they are foreign nationals, she is loosing predators onto our streets. In fact, these predators overwhelmingly prey on other innocent immigrants, the ones she claims to be helping,” Kennedy continued.
He said Spanberger shields illegal aliens “by blocking ICE at every turn.”
“Victims’ faces should haunt the governor when she looks in the mirror.”
“Every murder, rape, and robbery by an illegal alien was preventable if they had never been allowed in and let stay here,” he said. “They didn’t have to die. She only had to follow the law, not her agenda.”
