Editor note: Michael Martinez reached out to Law Enforcement Today to share his heart about what needs to happen to fix America - and we couldn't agree more.  This is his "why".

DENVER, CO - As a retired United States Marine Corps veteran with two decades of service and more than 20 years as a mechanical engineer in the aerospace sector, I am running for state representative to challenge the status quo and inject a dose of balance and common sense into our state government.

My candidacy is driven by a deep commitment to address pressing issues—crime, affordable housing, the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR), and personal freedoms—with practical solutions grounded in real-world experience.

My journey has been shaped by the values of discipline, integrity, and service. During my military career, I faced countless high-stakes situations where decisive action and strategic thinking were paramount. This experience taught me the importance of addressing challenges head-on and finding solutions that work, not just in theory but in practice.

Similarly, my career as a mechanical engineer in aerospace demanded precision and problem-solving skills. Designing systems that operate flawlessly under extreme conditions has instilled in me a meticulous approach to tackling complex problems.

The reason I am entering the political arena is clear: I am fed up with the current state of affairs. Our state government has become mired in partisan gridlock and ineffective policies that fail to address the real concerns of everyday citizens. It is time to bring a fresh perspective—one that values practical solutions over political gamesmanship.

One of my top priorities is to address crime. Our communities deserve to feel safe and secure. As a representative, I will advocate for sensible, data-driven approaches to law enforcement and criminal justice reform. We need strategies that not only focus on punitive measures but also on prevention, rehabilitation, and community support to ensure long-term safety and stability.

Affordable housing is another critical issue that demands immediate attention. Rising housing costs are placing an enormous strain on families and individuals, making it increasingly difficult to find safe and affordable places to live. I will work to support policies that increase housing supply, promote smart development, and provide assistance to those in need. It is essential that we create an environment where everyone has access to affordable housing and the opportunity to thrive.

TABOR has been a topic of considerable debate. While it was designed to protect taxpayers, its implementation has sometimes led to unintended consequences. I believe in respecting the principles of TABOR while also ensuring that our state can invest in essential services and infrastructure. We need a balanced approach that protects taxpayers while allowing for necessary investments in our communities.

Lastly, personal freedoms are a cornerstone of our democratic society. As a representative, I will stand firm in protecting individual rights and ensuring that government actions do not encroach on those personal freedoms we as a people hold most dear. It is crucial that we uphold the principles of liberty and autonomy while fostering a society that respects and values diverse perspectives.

In conclusion, my decision to run for state representative is driven by a desire to bring practical solutions and a balanced perspective to the state house. With a background rooted in service, leadership, and technical expertise, I am committed to addressing the critical issues facing our state. It is my goal to create a government that is responsive to the needs of its citizens and guided by common sense. I am ready to serve, and I ask for your support in this mission to make a meaningful difference.
