A Baby Was in Her Arms When Police Say He Tried to Kill Her

LA CROSSE, WI – Authorities out of Wisconsin arrested a 28-year-old man earlier in May accused of shopping for a would-be murder weapon at a local Walmart before attempting to fatally stab his ex-girlfriend while the victim held the couple’s baby.

On the evening of May 15th, La Crosse Police responded to a residence located off of 16th Street South where they discovered a woman who’d suffered several apparent stab wounds to the neck, armpit, and shoulder blade. Police also recovered the victim’s 11-month-old daughter who was present during the attack but was uninjured. The victim was rushed to an area hospital for emergency surgery and is expected to recover.

During the course of the investigation, police homed in on the victim’s ex-boyfriend and father of the child, Ivan Aldair Canchola-Garcia. The suspect’s movements were reportedly tracked in part via license plate readers which placed Canchola-Garcia at a local Walmart hours before the attack where he was seen in obtained surveillance footage shopping for the knife authorities allege was used during the incident.

Investigators discovered the discarded knife along with gloves and a mask at an area gas station which reportedly hosted video of the suspect disposing of the items at the location. Furthermore, a friend of the suspect reportedly told investigators that Canchola-Garcia admitted to carrying out the attack, with him allegedly telling the friend, “I did it. I did what I needed to do. I tried to kill her. I went for the neck.”

Canchola-Garcia was arrested on May 17th in Whitestown, Indiana, after authorities suspected he may have fled to a neighboring state following the alleged offense. The suspect has since been charged with attempted intentional homicide, domestic abuse, and use of a dangerous weapon and remains in custody at the La Crosse County Jail on a $1 million bond.
