CHICAGO, IL – Democrat Illinois Governor JB Pritzker alluded to an incident from earlier in October where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were surrounded and attacked during patrols near Broadview as “propaganda,” yet leaked police audio seems to tell a very different story where local police inaction was commanded from the top down.
As previously reported in Law Enforcement Today, protests and riots in Broadview, Illinois, and the surrounding areas having been ongoing well over a month, with rioters and anti-ICE demonstrators having essentially laid a de facto siege of sorts against the ICE processing center in Broadview.
On October 4th, Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin took to social media to report on an attack that occurred within Chicago, detailing an incident where agents were reportedly “rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars” during patrols of the area.
An allegedly armed woman who’d been on Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) radar for her purported exploits of “doxing agents” and posting threats against federal officers online was reportedly involved in the attack.
One of the concerning aspects noted in McLaughlin’s press release on social media was the allegation that Chicago Police were “leaving the shooting scene” and were actively refusing “to assist us in securing the area,” after the attack on agents resulted in gunfire.
While federal agents and officers on the ground have been dealing with the escalating violence coming from radicalized progressives in the area, Illinois Governor Pritzker opted to downplay what was happening in his state, suggesting that the attack on agents on October 4th in tandem with the notion Chicago Police weren’t assisting agents are part of a “propaganda” campaign from the current administration.
During a CNN appearance, network host Jake Tapper asked Governor Pritzker, “The spokesperson for DHS, Tricia McLaughlin, accused Chicago police of leaving the scene and refusing to assist agents in securing the area. What do you know about this incident? Were federal agents boxed in and assaulted?”
Governor Pritzker responded with a claim that his office doesn’t “have a lot of facts,” and went on to further assert, “So here, it’s really hard to know exactly what the facts are, and they won’t let us access the facts. They are just putting out their propaganda, and then we’ve got to later determine what actually happened.”
However, leaked Chicago Police dispatch communications revealed that local police were ordered from the top down to not assist or respond to the very incident Governor Pritzker claimed to have little information on.
As for the woman at the center of the October 4th incident, she has since been identified as 40-year-old Marimar Martinez. Officials say Martinez was shot and injured during the confrontation with federal agents and has since been charged with forcibly assaulting, impeding, and interfering with a federal law enforcement officer.
A second individual, identified as 21-year-old Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, was also charged in connection to the incident after officials say he attempted to run federal agents’ vehicles off the road while they were responding to the shooting involving Martinez.
