'Blue Alert' results in capture and arrest of attempted cop-killer in multi-state hunt

WEBBERS FALLS, OK - The Muskogee Police Department announced Monday that Billy Wayne Williams, wanted in the attempted murder of a Webbers Falls police officer, was located and taken into custody after a statewide Blue Alert was issued by Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) which pulled the resources of the OHP, Cherokee Marshals, the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service.

Court documents obtained by Fox23 revealed that on Sunday, an officer with the Webbers Falls Police Department pulled over a white SUV for a traffic stop driven by a man identified as Billy Wayne Williams via his Drivers License. After handing over his license to the officer, Williams allegedly drew a concealed handgun and shot the officer in the face at close range. The suspect then fled the scene and the stricken officer was rushed to an area hospital where he was treated and later released.

The Oklahoman reports that a Blue Alerts, similar to an Amber Alert, can be issued by authorities if an individual at large is suspected of killing or seriously injuring an officer in the line of duty or if a suspect poses a threat to law enforcement or if an active duty officer is declared missing.
According to the outlet, investigators were able to reach Williams' ex-wife, who told officers that he allegedly contacted her after the shooting and told her, “I just shot a cop in the face. I'm not going to jail. I'm driving north, I'm going to die tonight."

Officers searching Williams’ home found the white SUV driven during the traffic stop and surmised that he had switched vehicles to throw off pursuit. Williams' white Nissan Altima was spotted by the Grants Police Department in New Mexico after they received a "Be On the Look Out" (BOLO) from the OHP. His vehicle was reportedly flagged by FLOCK license plate reading cameras.

The vehicle, NewsOn6 reported, was found in a Walmart parking lot with Williams still inside. As Grants Police Officers approached to make contact with the suspect, a single gunshot rang out, which was quickly determined to be self-inflicted. Officers rendered first aid and the suspect was transported to a New Mexico Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

In a statement posted to X, the FBI revealed that Williams’ is an enrolled member of the Choctaw Tribe of Oklahoma and will be remanded to the custody of the US Marshals Service upon release from the hospital. He’s facing federal charges of Assault with Intent to Commit Murder in Indian Country and Attempted Murder in Indian Country.
The latest reporting from Fox23 described Williams in critical but stable condition.
