Kentucky First Responders Take the Field to Support Shop With a Cop

PRESTONSBURG, KY – Earlier in August, Prestonsburg Fire and Police Departments teamed up to take on the local high school softball team for a fundraising game meant to benefit the police department’s Shop with a Cop program. While the first responders ultimately took the win in the game, it was the community that won overall with the funds raised during the event.

Last week, the first annual Shop with a Cop softball game was held at the Stonecrest Baseball Complex in Prestonsburg, with first responders from the city and surrounding county having formed a team to take on the varsity softball team from Prestonsburg High School.

Tickets to the event were $5, with concessions also being available at the venue, with all proceeds going toward Prestonsburg Police’s Shop with a Cop program.

On the day of the event, Prestonsburg Police Chief Ross Shurtleff took to social media to hype up the then-upcoming game, saying in a video posted to Facebook, “Good morning, Prestonsburg. You know what today is. Today is August 23rd, Saturday. The day you've been waiting for. The greatest sporting event in all of history takes place tonight. Six o'clock, Stonecrest Ballfields. The Prestonsburg Siren Superstars - I don't know who came up with that name - take on Prestonsburg Varsity Black Cat Baseball for the most amazing cause in the world.”

Chief Shurtleff let his sense of humor loose during the video posted online, taking small jabs at his teammates from the local fire department when saying, “I talked about it for a long time last night. I want to get this out there. I'm not going live yet, because the fire department hasn't woken up yet, so they can't get on and, you know, rebuttal me, which just gives me more ammo to go off of. You know why firefighters are so dramatic? It's because they stage all the time. See you at six.”

The game was originally slated to take place on August 2nd, but local reports note that “due to a scheduling conflict,” the fundraising event was moved up three weeks. Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) umpires reportedly officiated the game, with the event garnering over $3,000 in proceeds which will benefit local families with the PPD’s Shop with a Cop program.
