Steady State Group Says FBI Leadership Engaged in Loyalty Tests

WASHINGTON, DC – A hodge podge of former officials stemming from the FBI and arenas amid the intelligence, diplomatic, and national security communities penned an open letter earlier in August accusing FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino of firing agents over perceived disloyalty to President Donald Trump.

On August 9th, a group of individuals originating from a myriad of three-letter agencies populating D.C. who call themselves The Steady State published an open letter lambasting the current heads of the FBI under the current administration, namely Director Patel and Deputy Director Bongino.

In the opening of the letter from the group, The Steady State aim to qualify their criticisms of the current FBI by way of listing their accumulated professional credentials, identifying themselves as “a nonpartisan group of professionals who have served in the CIA, FBI, State Department, Department of Defense, NSA, DHS, and the uniformed military,” further adding an appeal to emotion in their drafted qualifier by adding, “Together, we have spent our careers upholding the Constitution and defending the United States from foreign and domestic threats.”

In the group’s list of mentioned concerns within the open letter, a particular point of contention was raised with the dismissal of “seasoned FBI leaders - most notably Agents Brian Driscoll, Michael Feinberg, Walter Giardina,” asserting that the removal of the aforementioned agents was solely motivated over “disloyalty to former President Donald Trump.”

Despite any potential evidence the group may cite of said dismissals being motivated over perceived disloyalty to the current administration, it’s simultaneously difficult to read The Steady State as being unbiased in their assertions considering the aforementioned framing of the current president as being the “former” one, as it betrays an obvious disdain the group has for President Trump.

The anti-Trump bias motivating The Steady State’s open letter continues to proverbially bleed through in the ensuing paragraphs, with the group reciting a common claim that Director Patel and Deputy Director Bongino are “unqualified” for the roles they hold at the Bureau.

According to the allegedly “nonpartisan" group, they describe Director Patel’s leadership of the FBI as a means “to transform the FBI from a respected, constitutionally grounded investigative service into a personal enforcement arm of a political figure.”

For those who spent any amount of time digesting news broadcasts surrounding the confirmation hearing of Director Patel in early 2025, there’s nothing contained within The Steady State’s open letter that is new in terms of accusations levied against the then-would be Bureau head or current administration, insofar that the group characterizes the Trump administration as a “regime” that will punish detractors and Trump's appointees are "unqualified" to hold any noteworthy positions.
