LOS ANGELES, CA – A handful of Los Angeles City Council members are blaming Home Depot for not taking action against various immigration enforcement operations having taken place in parking lots across the home improvement store’s various locations, alleging the brand is complicit in illegal immigrants coincidentally being apprehended while on their properties.
As previously reported in Law Enforcement Today, L.A. City Council member Ysabel Jurado took to Instagram in late August to lambast Home Depot over the happenstance that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had managed to apprehend illegal immigrants encountered among a handful of the retail establishment’s parking lots.
Jurado's August 30th Instagram post opened with, “Yesterday morning, federal agents conducted a warrantless raid at a Westlake Home Depot, the fourth attack on this location since June. These raids are part of a disturbing pattern across Los Angeles, with ICE repeatedly targeting Home Depot parking lots - common gathering spots for day laborers - without additional warrants in clear violation of people's rights. And yet Home Depot has remained silent.”
The L.A. councilwoman further emphasized her opposition toward the home improvement store’s recent building application to convert an abandoned Macy’s location into a new location in Eagle Rock.
Jurado’s online statement concluded with, “That is why I unequivocally oppose Home Depot coming to Eagle Rock Plaza, a mall that has long been a gathering place for the Filipino community in Los Angeles. I will not allow violence to take root in our neighborhoods. Our communities deserve safety, dignity, and businesses that fight for the people, not against them.”
Since Jurado’s veiled threats to punish Home Depot for the company’s First Amendment right to comment, or not comment, on matters related to public policy and federal law, two other L.A. City Council members have voiced their allegiance to Jurado’s crusade against the home improvement retailer.
Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez was among the two to chime in their support for Jurado, sharing a statement with Fox News Digital which reads, “We've seen multiple violent raids against innocent workers, including a U.S citizen, at the Home Depot in our district. Home Depot relies on immigrant labor, but hasn't done a thing to defend families being torn apart by Trump and his cronies. We stand behind Councilmember Jurado 100%.”
The notion asserted by Councilman Soto-Martinez that Home Depot “relies on immigrant labor” isn’t supported by any viable metric or datapoint but rather seems to be a conflation of the decades old stereotype of illegal immigrants often gathering outside of Home Depots in search of unlawful, under-the-table work.
Councilmember Adrian Nazarian also entered the political fray against Home Depot, with a statement from a representative for the councilmember reading, “Councilmember Nazarian supports Councilmember Jurado's judgment of what is best for her own district. In the present case, he does not believe Home Depot has been a good neighbor to the people of Los Angeles.”
Home Depot shared a fairly neutral statement amidst the vitriol coming from the L.A. City Council, highlighting, “We aren’t notified that ICE activities are going to happen, and we’re not requesting them. In many cases, we don't know that arrests have taken place until after they're over. We’re required to follow all federal and local rules and regulations in every market where we operate.”

And why would Home Depot say anything? One would thing any American business would want the Feds to come in and rid the place of the illegals. That being said, ICE does not need a warrant to go to a parking lot to catch illegals when they know full well they are there, and they don't have to enter a building.
