BEXAR COUNTY, TX - A man who was arrested on Sunday, July 20th for allegedly killing his wife, claimed that he had a "mental break" after police found the decomposing body of his wife on his property the day before.
Charles Vandoil Byrd, 49, was taken into custody after his wife, 44-year-old Angela Byrd, was found dead, according to Law & Crime. An arrest affidavit obtained by KSAT shows that sheriff's deputies responded to the home after a relative said that Charles "may have done something" to his wife. Deputies searched for him all weekend and did not find him until Sunday,
Police reported that when they arrived at the Byrd's home on Saturday, they detected a strong odor of decomposition on the property. While searching the home, police found a decomposed body inside, wrapped in plastic, carpet, and blankets; it was then secured with rachet straps.
Police believe the body is of his wife, Angela Byrd. However, the medical examiner will confirm the body's identity and cause and manner of death following an autopsy.
While leaving the courthouse on Monday, July 21st, following his first appearance with a judge, he was reportedly picked up on video saying he had a "mental break" and killed his wife, adding, "I'm so sorry. I loved my wife." After appearing in court, the judge set his bond at $200,000.
Charles has been charged with tampering with evidence with intent to impair a human corpse. He was found by police outside his home with his hands raised, according to the affidavit.
During a press conference, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said that Charles cooperated with police when he was questioned and reportedly admitted that he and his wife had a physical altercation on June 16th that allegedly "led to her death." Salazar said that Charles lived with the body in his home for weeks and attempted to handle the smell with household products.
The arrest affidavit also states that the relative who called the police in the first place said that Charles reportedly confessed to killing his wife. The same relative told police that they had smelled the odor of decomposition at the Byrds' residence.
Charles worked for a San Antonio-area school district as a janitor. A spokesperson for the Floresville Independent School District confirmed that he had worked in the maintenance department as a master plumber since 2021. After his arrest, the spokesperson said that Charles is no longer employed by the school district.
The spokesperson also noted that Byrd did not have any direct contact with students during his work with the district. While Charles is facing only one charge at the moment, Salazar said that he will likely face "at least a murder charge" once the autopsy results are released.
