NEW YORK CITY, NY - A 17-year-old was non-fatally shot in Times Square earlier in June while New York Knicks fans reportedly swarmed the area following a historic conclusion to the NBA Finals where the Knicks ended an over half-century Finals victory drought.
The NYPD is actively investigating a non-fatal shooting of a 17-year-old that occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. on June 14 near the area of 42nd Street and Broadway in Times Square. Authorities say the incident occurred while Knicks fans were actively engaged in a de facto street takeover following the team’s Finals victory.
The teen was reportedly struck in the left foot during the incident and was subsequently transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. Officials haven’t announced any details regarding possible suspects or pending charges regarding the incident, but reportedly three people were detained near 39th Street and a firearm was recovered.
Vandalism and clashes with law enforcement seemingly overshadowed the Knicks' first championship win since 1973 outside Madison Square Garden, as reportedly tens of thousands of people swarmed the streets, with some damaging vehicles and engaging in generally riotous behavior.
Reportedly four people were either stabbed or slashed during the chaos in New York City, while a school bus that was being used for World Cup transportation was set ablaze during the takeover. James Dolan, the owner of the Knicks, issued a statement while still in San Antonio following the game, urging fans to celebrate peacefully.
“We need to tell everybody in New York that we know that they’re celebrating, we want them to have a great time. Please be safe. Don’t get hurt, don’t hurt anybody,” Dolan stated.
At least 63 people were arrested during the street takeover, with some of the arrestees facing charges of assaulting a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.
As authorities work to restore the area outside of Madison Square Garden following the overnight celebration gone awry, an official celebration for the Knicks win is being planned by the city and is slated for June 18.
