Portland Police Union Stands Firm Against Radical Left Policy Push

PORTLAND, OR- The Portland Police Association is pushing back against an unhinged socialist city council member who criticized the police union for refusing to support a city ordinance that would put city officers at odds with federal law enforcement officers.

In a post on far-left social media site BlueSky, Angelita Morillo posted the following:

“We are at a crossroads. The Police Union can choose to stand with Portlanders, to stand against fascism [as if she has a clue what that is], or they can continue to obstruct policies that would reign [sic] in the feds because they see a kinship with corrupt law enforcement and not with the good people of our city.”

From someone who has no grasp of the English language, it’s no wonder the Portland Police Association is pushing back against Morillo.

Morillo then took to outing city council members who are endorsed by the police union, and anyone who has watched the leftist playbook for any length of time knows exactly why she did it. She is hoping the unhinged Antifa loons will target those five city council members.

The Supremacy Clause of the United States Constitution (Article VI, Clause 2) reads as follows:

This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constituion or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.

Seems pretty simple. Police officers swear an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States, which includes The Supremacy Clause. Attempting to pit local police officers against federal law enforcement authorities appears prima facie unconstitutional and a recipe for disaster, as the Portland Police Association noted in its Facebook post explaining its position:

In response to Morillo’s ridiculous claim that the PPA is “defending fascism,” PPA President Sgt. Aaron Schmautz said that Morillo’s proposed city ordinance “is not legally enforceable against federal officers.”

“That’s a false choice and a reckless accusation. Portlanders deserve facts, not slogans,” Schmautz wrote.

Schmautz took Morillo to task for remaining silent when two PPA police officers “were nearly murdered.”

“Good policy has to be grounded in reality,” he wrote. “A city ordinance cannot legally bind federal law enforcement [see above Supremacy Clause]. So ‘bans’ aimed at federal personnel may generate headlines, but they won’t stop the conduct they target because the city lacks legal authority to enforce them.” He noted that state law and Portland Police Bureau policy already address key issues, including identification requirements and restrictions on the use of less lethal munitions, including gas.

“We oppose performative ordinances that won’t bind the feds and would create dangerous, unintended consequences for local community-centered policing. Other city officials, including from PPB and the Public Safety Service Area, have raised the same concerns,” Schmautz wrote.

“Portland’s progress won’t be measured in clicks or outrage. It will be measured in results.”

Clearly, Morillo is trying to pander to the radical left in Portland, of which there are many.

Replies to the PPA’s post were largely positive.

“By Portlanders, do you mean less than one percent of the population of Portland was at the rally? 99% of Portlanders want law and order and good people in Portland,” wrote Mark Vosper.

“I’m sure she [Morillo] couldn’t give you a definition of fascism if asked,” wrote Lisa Fortress.

“City of Portland’s failing is a reflection of the mayor and Portland City Council’s bad policies. Looking at her page, her posts get little to no support. She and her kind need to stand aside and let PPA and Fed fight crime effectively so Portland can thrive again," Mary Gibbs wrote.
