SAN DIEGO, CA – A 19-year-old illegal alien from Mexico was reportedly arrested and federally charged earlier in August after authorities say he assaulted a federal officer and damaged government property while allegedly in the midst of fleeing a traffic stop.
As previously reported here at Law Enforcement Today, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents announced the arrest of a then-unnamed Mexican national, who was already twice deported, following an August 11th traffic stop that briefly went awry. As noted in the aforementioned reporting, the illegal alien allegedly attempted to flee a traffic stop in San Diego, resulting in government vehicles being crashed into by the suspect’s vehicle and injuring a federal officer in the process.
In an update provided by ICE via an August 20th press release, officials have identified the illegal alien as Rolando Nava Pacheco, making mention of the federal charges the Mexican national is now facing, which include assaulting a federal officer and damaging government property.
The Justice Department issued its own press release regarding Pacheco’s charges, affording a more detailed account of the August 11th incident that led to the illegal alien’s arrest and subsequent charges. According to the Justice Department, Pacheco immediately fled from federal agents during the traffic stop when asked to present identification.
During the attempted escape from the encounter, officials say Pacheco “recklessly” operated his vehicle as federal agents were trying to box in the area, which Pacheco then “proceeded to strike the federal agent’s vehicle head-on.”
U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon issued a statement in light of the charges, saying, “Our office is committed to protecting our federal law enforcement partners. Put plainly, those who attempt to injure or evade law enforcement will face federal charges.”
A summary of charges provided by the Justice Department reads that Pacheco was hit with assault on a federal officer, assault on a federal officer resulting in bodily injury, and destruction of government property, which the combined offenses could result in up to 38 years in prison if the maximum sentences were served consecutively upon conviction. Pacheco has been assigned a public defender, Brittany L. Sherron, who practices at the Federal Defenders of San Diego office, which the outfit boasts, “The majority of our clients are charged with drug and immigration related offenses.”
