High crime and low police: Democrat-run Washington ranked most dangerous state in America

WASHINGTON STATE - According to a study released by WalletHub, Washington State is officially the most dangerous state to live in in 2024. According to the study, which analyzed states based on property crime, traffic accidents, and violent crime, and employed members of law enforcement per capita, Washington came out on top.

The study found that Washington beat Colorado, California, and Oregon.

By taking into account the number of police officers employed in the state, the data not only found that Washington is a dangerous place to live, but exposed the grim reality of policing in Democrat-run states. Not only are these states not hiring enough police officers, but new recruits aren’t stepping up to become the next generation of police officers.

And who can blame them?

Washington now has the fewest police officers per capita compared to anywhere else in the United States. Crime data also shows an upward trend. In 2022, violent crime in Washington was 376.5 per 100,000 people, which was a substantial increase over recent years.

Crime rates are growing in the state largely as a result of increasing numbers of aggravated assaults and homicides. In 2022, aggravated assaults increased by 30% compared to the prior five years, and murders reached an all-time-high of 394 that year.

It’s Not Just Washington

Earlier this year, personal injury attorneys revealed the states that suffer the most violent crime, injury, and incident-related deaths. According to data from the World Health Organization’s Mortality Database, death rates in the United States are already 2.5 times higher than the average death rates in similar first-world countries – and those deaths are largely driven by drug overdoses, suicide, homicide, and traffic accidents. Heart conditions and chronic disease are also major drivers of the United States’ higher-than-normal death rate.

But those problems aren’t found everywhere in the country – at least to a huge extent. A study published by Caputo and Van Der Walde Injury and Accident Attorneys compared all 50 states across ten different metrics, ranging from firearm mortalities to workplace injuries.

The study found that, with all metrics considered, the most dangerous state to live in was New Mexico, with Louisiana coming second and Arkansas third. In New Mexico, the higher-than-normal death rate was attributed to high levels of burglary, homicide, assault, and firearm mortality. In Louisiana, the problem was largely driven by traffic accidents.

It's data like this that has been used by the Democratic Party to argue against Republican talking points on crime – but a closer look at crime rates in New Mexico reveals that the worst-offending cities and towns in the state are Democrat-run. The city of Taos, for example, is the most dangerous city in the state. It’s also one of the most reliably Blue cities, and counties, in the state.
