An assassination attempt of a presumptive Presidential Candidate in the country seen as the leader of the free world is no small thing. Historically, when tragedy befalls the United States, we see calls from unity from all political walks of life, and, it’s true that we have seen that response from some on the left following the attempt to end Donald Trump’s life.
However, there are many who are proudly touting their disappointment that the shooter “missed.”
Some of those are clearly mentally deranged, posting TikTok rants and screaming into the camera. Some, however, are influential community members- including professors, FBI employees, local politicians, and more. Here are just some examples of violent or inappropriate comments regarding the attempted assassination that can be found on social media.
First, Dr. Karen Pinder, a professor with the University of British Columbia, who posted on X, “Damn, so close. Too bad.” Pinder’s X account has since been deleted, and LET has reached out to her, as well as communications and media relations at UBC for further comment.
Next, a Democratic Council woman for the Upper Darby Township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Jess Branas, who posted on Facebook, “A for effort” several hours after the assassination attempt. When she was called out in the comments, she claimed she was talking about a “steak” that was not cooked properly. After 145 comments, Branas turned commenting off on the post. Branas also works for State House Democrat Heather Boyd (PA-163). Boyd posted the following comment without answering follow up questions from LET or others on the matter: “Earlier today a social media post made by a former member of my staff was brought to my attention. This matter has been dealt with swiftly.”
The mayor of Aberdeen, a city in Washington State, also posted a comment that’s turning heads. Douglas Orr posted on Facebook, “Sick how polatics have devoled. Ears bleed alot. I hope they check to make sure it wasn’t just a self inflicted scratch. The shooter is dead so we will never know if it was staged. Not buying it quite yet…I hope I’m wrong, but because of his record of deceit, that’s the first thing that came to my mind” (mistakes his own). Orr told LET that he has issued an apology for the post. He said, "I tried to take the post down shortly after I posted it, but it has been copied and shared a million times. Very sorry for posting what I did."
Former Democratic Connecticut State Representative Kenneth Gucker, who is currently running for District 138, posted a meme from Get Smart with the words, “Missed him by that much.” That post has been deleted and a follow up post made, which reads, “Gun violence is never a joking matter and yesterday a regrettable incident occurred where a meme was attached to a group of photos. This was a regrettable incident and the post has been removed.” Hearst Connecticut Media reached out to Gucker, who said his campaign is “investigating” how the mistake occurred, blaming staff. However, the Hat City Blog reviewed the last several months of campaign finances and did not find any staffers listed. The post remained on his Facebook page for 11-12 hours before it was removed. Local residents and Republican politicians are calling for Gucker to end his campaign.
The social media account LibsOfTikTok has posted several other instances of comments like those made above from other teachers, professors, firefighters (one who has since resigned from his position), and even a Senior Program Manager at Uber, Eric Cartrite.
While many Democrat politicians have used their platforms to decry that there is no place in politics for violence and further speak out about gun violence, many on social media are questioning those stances given their past comments.
For example, Joe Biden himself has countless times referred to Donald Trump and “MAGA people” as “threats” to the nation, and even called for him to be put in a “bullseye.”
Way back in 2020, California Representative Maxine Waters encouraged rioters to harass Trump administration officials “in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd. And you push back on them. And you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere…”
Then of course there is former actress Kathy Griffin, who was proudly photographed holding a mock decapitated bloody Donald Trump head for all the world to see.
Since then, we have seen countless actors, politicians, influencers, and others have pitched in their two cents on why Donald Trump should be “taken out” or “stopped” by any means necessary.
One need not look far when questioning why someone would stoop to attempting to murder a former President and current candidate for President of the United States.
